What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is a natural language processing tool driven by AI technology that allows you to have human-like conversations and more with chatbots. Language models can answer questions, and help you with tasks like writing emails, essays, and code. Use is currently open to the public free of charge as ChatGPT is in the research and feedback gathering phase. Starting February 1st, there is also a paid subscription version called ChatGPT Plus.
Who created ChatGPT?
ChatGPT was created by OpenAI, an AI and research company. The company launched ChatGPT on November 30, 2022.
OpenAI is also responsible for creating DALLE • 2, the popular AI art generator, and Whisper, an automated speech recognition system.
How big of a problem is ChatGPT?
This of course made a big splash. “ChatGPT is scary good. We are not far from a very strong AI,” said Elon Musk, who was a co-founder of OpenAI before leaving. Sam Altman, head of OpenAI, said on Twitter that ChatGPT had more than 1 million users in the first five days after launch. Altman told Musk that the average cost of each response was in “single-digit cents” but admitted they needed to monetize it eventually because of the “eye-watering” computational costs.
According to an analysis by Swiss bank UBS, ChatGPT is the fastest growing app of all time. In January, just two months after launch, UBS analysis estimated that ChatGPT had 100 million active users. In comparison, it took TikTok nine months to reach 100 million.
How can you access ChatGPT?
You can access ChatGPT by simply visiting chat.openai.com and creating an OpenAI account.
Once you are logged in you can start chatting with ChatGPT. Start your conversation by asking a question.
Since ChatGPT is still in its research phase, it is free to use and you can ask as many questions as you want.
I tried using ChatGPT and it says capacity, what does that mean?
ChatGPT is free to use at this time as it is still in the research phase. Due to the hype created by its advanced abilities, many people flocked to use it. Websites operate using servers, and when too many people jump on the server, it becomes overwhelming and unable to process your request. This doesn't mean you can never access it. It just means you should try visiting the site at a later time when fewer people are trying to access it. You can also keep tabs open and refresh them periodically.
If you want to skip the wait and have reliable access, there are options for you. Starting February 1, OpenAI has a ChatGPT pro plan, ChatGPT Plus, which allows users to have general access even during busy times, experience faster response times, and have priority access to new features and improvements. The premium service does come at a cost of $20/month.
How does ChatGPT work?
OpenAI trains the language model using Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF), according to OpenAI. The human AI trainer provides a conversational model in which they play both parts, the user and the AI assistant.
What is the difference between ChatGPT and a search engine?
ChatGPT is a language model created with the aim of having conversations with end users. Search engines index web pages on the internet to help users find the information they request. ChatGPT does not have the ability to search for information on the internet.
It uses the information it learns from the training data to generate a response, which leaves room for error.
What are the limitations of ChatGPT?
Although it looks very impressive, ChatGPT still has limitations. Such limitations include an inability to answer worded questions in a certain way, as it requires rewriting to understand the input question. An even bigger limitation is the lack of quality in the responses it provides – which at times sound reasonable but make no practical sense or can be overly wordy.
Instead of asking for clarification on ambiguous questions, the model only guesses what your question means, which can lead to unwanted responses to questions. Already this has caused developer question-and-answer site StackOverflow to at least temporarily ban ChatGPT-generated responses to questions.
“The main problem is that while ChatGPT generated answers have a high error rate, they usually look like they might be good and the answers are very easy to generate,” said a Stack Overflow moderator in a post. Critics argue that these tools are very good at putting words into a sequence that makes sense from a statistical point of view, but they can't understand their meaning or know if the statements they make are true.
Another major limitation is that ChatGPT data is limited to 2021. The chatbot has no awareness of events or news that have occurred since then. Therefore, some of the clues you ask will not give results such as "Who won the World Cup in 2022?"
Can I chat with ChatGPT?
Although some people use ChatGPT for some very complex functions like writing code or even malware, you can use ChatGPT for more mundane activities like having a friendly conversation.
Some conversation starters can be as simple as, "I'm hungry, what food should I get?" or as plainly as, “What do you think happens in the afterlife?” Either way, ChatGPT definitely has an answer for you.
Why are some people worried about ChatGPT?
People are expressing concern about AI chatbots displacing or disabling human intelligence. For example, chatbots can efficiently (though not necessarily accurately) write articles on any topic in seconds, potentially eliminating the need for human writers. Chatbots can also write entire complete essays in seconds, making it easier for students to cheat or avoid learning how to write properly. This has led to some school districts blocking access to it.
Another concern with AI chatbots is the possibility of spreading misinformation. Since the bot is not connected to the internet, it can make mistakes in what information it is sharing.
The bot itself says, “My feedback is not meant to be taken as fact, and I always encourage people to verify any information they receive from me or other sources.” OpenAI itself also notes that ChatGPT sometimes writes “reasonable-sounding but wrong or nonsensical answers.”
